Perhaps my best meal of all in Australia was the Italian dinner we had at A Tavola in Darlinghurst, just around the corner from our hotel. In fact, I would go so far as to say I had the best dessert of my life there.

Here it is, I'm working backwards because I can't mention this place without immediately raving about the cremino al cioccolato. Italian meringue topped chocolate mousse, with a layer of soft salted caramel. I was actually lost for words. Served in a little cup and saucer, god, I want it now!

Mains were brilliant too, I chose from the specials, parpadelle con ragu di agrello. Freshly made daily, the pasta was hanging up at the rear of the restaurant, where the kitchen is. Certainly the best pasta dish I've eaten in a restaurant, with a rich slow cooked lamb sauce, this place was such a gem and I need to find a restaurant in London which is up to this level of Italian cooking. Thomas' gnocci was, guess what? The best gnocci I've ever had, with peas and mushrooms.

We were lucky to get in without booking ahead, we were seated along the long communal table and the menu was explained to us in great detail. The wine advise was also spot on, we had a great Sicilian Nero D'avola, perfect with the ragu. Starters of burrata, with grapes and tomatoes, and carpaccio di manzo with beetroot and watercress we interesting combinations too. Served with a light and pillowy focaccia bread.

I can't rave about the place enough, Eugenio Maiale, you're a genius. Can you open a restaurant in London please? Seamlessly moving on to somebody who has....Bill Granger.

I've not been to Bill's in London yet, but I did hit up 1 of his 3 Sydney addresses. My lasting memory of the place is that it was overpriced and the service was crap. This is pretty much in the same vein as what I've read about the Notting Hill venue.

We visited on a Monday so, thankfully, didn't have to face a queue. There's a large communal table, a nice selection of magazines to read and an open kitchen. We kicked things off with lattes and stuck to the 'classic' Granger dishes, sweetcorn fritters, with an extra side of guacamole ($4.50, for that measly portion), and the ricotta hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter.

Tbh, I'm not the biggest fan of sweet dishes for breakfast so the fritters were my preference of the 2 but I could certainly appreciate the lightness of the hotcakes. I'd love them as a seriously big dessert. The whole thing was a little soured due to the inattentive servers. We were seated by a guy who immediately left the building and about 20 minutes later, we had to go and find someone else to serve us. I'd read similar reports. This is why I've not rushed to try the London branch.

There are a multitude of appealing cafes and bars in the area where we stayed. A walk to Surrey Hills one day took us via the corner of Forbes and Burton Streets, where Forbes & Burton was abuzz. We nabbed the last available table for a lunch to fill up ahead of an afternoon of exploring.

Thomas' pulled pork sandwich with homemade brown sauce, coriander, mint, carrot and rocket was fantastic. Each ingredient detectable between the robust slices of sourdough. These are proper sandwiches.

I went for the croque monsieur with smoked leg ham, swiss gruy?re and mustard b?chamel. I developed a bit of a thing for a jazzed up toasted cheese while I was in Oz! We shared a side salad and a pot of earl grey and were all set for a day on our feet.

Other highlights included drinks with iconic views at Opera Bar and at the top of the Shangri La hotel. The latter offers brilliant cocktails and a great system which pretty much guarantees you a seat at some point, no matter how busy things get. We only had to wait for around 20 minutes which flew by as we caught up with our friend Lex and Jane. I loved Sydney, despite the constant rain during the 3 days we were there. No beaches unfortunately, but plenty of great food and drink.

Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner

A close cousin to the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini ($295 direct, 4 stars), and one small step up in Canon's line, the Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner ($325 direct) combines a not quite identical scanner with improved software. The result is an even more attractive package, both as a portable scanner and as a small-size personal desktop scanner. It's also the new Editors' Choice for its category.

The P-215 is so similar to the P-150 that it's hard to see a difference. At 1.6 by 11.2 by 3.7 inches (HWD) and 2.2 pounds, it's just a little bigger (by 0.2 inches in one dimension), a little heavier (by 0.1 pound), and costs just a little more. However it's otherwise nearly identical, with a 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF), duplexing (the ability to scan both sides of a page simultaneously), and even the same claimed speed.

Canon rates both scanners in both grayscale and black and white modes at 15 pages per minute (ppm) for both simplex (one-sided) and duplex (two-sided) scans, and at 30 images per minute (ipm) for duplex (with one image on each side of the page). Color mode is a still reasonable 10 ppm and 20 ipm. Beyond that, the scanners share most of their specifications point for point. However, Canon says that the P-215 adds the ability to scan hard plastic cards, like embossed ID cards and driver licenses.

Setup
One welcome improvement for the P-215 is easier setup for the scanner itself. With the P-150 you had to install a part in the scanner by following confusing instructions. The P-215 comes out of the box ready to work. Setup can be as simple as connecting the supplied USB cable. However, you also have other choices.

The P-215 gets power over the same USB cable it uses for data. It can also get additional power from an optional AC power supply (although it's not available at this writing) or from a second supplied cable that plugs into the scanner's power supply connector on one end and a second computer USB port on the other. Canon says that using the power supply or second cable will boost scan speed, but I didn't see any difference in my tests. Given that different USB ports can supply different levels of power, you may or may not see a difference on your computer.

Software choices
You also have the option whether or not to install software. If you don't want to install any, you can use the Canon CaptureOnTouch Lite utility stored in the scanner's memory. Connect by USB cable, and the computer will see the memory as a USB drive. Depending on how your computer is set up, it will then either launch the utility automatically or let you run it manually.

Alternatively, you can install the full version of CaptureOnTouch, which gives you much more control over the scan settings. You can also install a Twain driver, which will let you scan directly from most Windows programs; Nuance PaperPort 11 for document management and optical character recognition (OCR); NewSoft Presto! BizCard 6 SE for scanning and managing business cards; and connectors for Google Docs, Evernote, and Microsoft Sharepoint.

The software installation is mostly standard. However, it suffers from the same issue as the installation program for the Canon imageFormula DR-C125 ($495 direct, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed. During installation, you need to choose between a Typical or Custom install. With most scanners, the Typical option would install everything. With the P-215, however, it installs only the driver, scan utility, and user manual.

As I pointed out in the DR-C125 review, these choices really should be labeled Minimal and With Programs. At the very least, there should be some additional information explaining what each choice installs. Without it you may well go ahead with the Typical choice and never know that there are other programs available or how to install them.

Choosing Software
I tested the P-215 on a system running Windows Vista and with all four setup options?using one cable and two in combination both with CaptureOnTouch Lite and with the full set of installed software. Adding the second connection made no difference in speed with either software choice. However, the software makes a noticeable difference in usability.

CaptureOnTouch Lite will let you scan to searchable PDF files as well as image PDF, JPG, BMP, and other image file formats. The full version of the utility adds much more control over scan settings, while PaperPort and BizCard 6 add document management, the ability to recognize text and save it in editable format, and the ability to scan and manage business cards. What this adds up to is that unless you have a very good reason not to, you should install the software on your hard disk.

Performance
The P-215 offers a 600 pixel per inch (ppi) optical resolution, which is much more than you need for document scanning. Its default setting is 200 ppi, which is generally sufficient. In my tests, using the default settings of 200 ppi and automatic color detection, scanning to a PDF file, and giving the scan command from PaperPort, a 10 page document in both simplex and duplex modes matched the claimed 10 ppm and 20 ipm for color scans, but took an extra 35 seconds to save the file, so the effective speed was 6.3 ppm and 12.6 ipm. That's an acceptable speed even for a personal desktop scanner. For a portable scanner it's blazingly fast.

Much more important is that the P-215 doesn't slow down when you scan directly to a searchable PDF file. Only a few other scanners, mostly from Canon, can manage this trick. The DR-C125, for example, doesn't slow down at all for text recognition, and the P-150 adds just a few seconds. In contrast, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 ($295, 3.5 stars), like most scanners, takes a significant amount of extra time for text recognition, at 1 minute 43 seconds to scan 10 pages and save to an image file, compared with 2:37 to scan and recognize the text.

In addition to its fast scan speed, the P-215 scored well on our other tests also. Scanning to Word format, the combination of the scanner and PaperPort read our Times New Roman test page at sizes as small as 5 points and our Arial test page at sizes as small as 6 points without a mistake. Few scanners we've tested have done anywhere near as well for OCR accuracy.

Results for business cards were mixed. The scanner had trouble feeding stacks of cards, so I needed to manually feed some of them one at a time. The speed was also slow enough?at about 25 seconds per card?that a fast typist could do the job in less time than it takes to scan and then check the results. However, the accuracy was good enough to be useful, with errors on fewer than half of the cards, and most of those having only one or two errors.

Despite the lackluster results on our business card tests, the Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner is more than a little impressive. It's fast, particularly for scanning to searchable PDF format; it offers an ADF and duplexing; and its text recognition is unusually accurate. The combination makes it a standout winner, both as a capable personal desktop scanner and even more so as a portable scanner that doesn't force you to make compromises. By any measure, it's an easy pick for Editors' Choice.

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. ? Crying and wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, a slight, 9-year-old boy stood before a judge who would determine whether he would face criminal charges in a school shooting that left another third-grader critically wounded.

The week before, court records say, the boy had told classmates that he planned to run away from his uncle?s house, where he has lived since his grandmother died a year ago. He told them he would bring his dad?s gun with him for protection. Instead, he found a gun at his mother?s house, where he had visited over the weekend, records say.

On Wednesday, the boy stowed the .45-caliber Heckler and Koch pistol at the bottom of his backpack. The safety was off and the gun was cocked.

Around 1:29 p.m., one minute before school let out, the boy plopped his backpack on a desk in his third-grade classroom in Bremerton, Wash, a quiet community that is an hour from Seattle by ferry.

The gun went off, making a loud boom, and Amina Kocer-Bowman, age 8, crumbled to the floor, bleeding from a hole in her stomach.

Amina?s teacher administered first aid before a flight across Puget Sound to Harborview Medical Center.

An officer found that the bottom of the boy?s backpack had been blown open where the pistol?s muzzle had been pointed. The gun had another live round in the chamber and a spent .45 casing was still in the pack.

Preliminary hearing
During the hearing on Thursday, the boy sat next to his father, who rubbed his son?s back. After, as officers led the boy away, his father, Jason Cochran, had tears in his eyes as he hugged his son.

"I just want everyone to know that my kid made a mistake. It was a terrible mistake," his father, Jason Cochran, said outside the courthouse, according to The Associated Press.

The boy is being investigated on these charges: Third-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree and possession of a firearm on school facilities. Bail was set at $50,000 bail. The boy would be released to his uncle and legal guardian, Patrick Cochran, if it is met.

"He's a good kid. It's all I can say," Patrick Cochran told the AP. "I apologize to the family of that girl. I really do."

Amina remained in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after undergoing surgery. Her doctor said she would likely stay at the hospital for several weeks and go through more surgeries.

Todd Dowell of the Kitsap County prosecutor's juvenile division told msnbc.com that several of the boy's family members?had attended the hearing.

Dowell said that under state law children between 8 and 12 years old can face charges if a court determines the child has the capacity to understand an act is wrong. A capacity hearing in this case is scheduled for March 7.

Bremerton police Lt. Peter Fisher would not discuss whether authorities were investigating any adults in connection with the shooting or release further information about the investigation.

Authorities say the shooting was accidental.

Kids and guns
Twenty-seven states have some form of firearm child access prevention laws. Such laws can include criminal penalties for adults who allow children to get their hands on guns, but Washington is not one of those states, according to the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence.

Gail Hammer, a law professor at Gonzaga University in Spokane, said it is very rare for a child as young as 9 to be charged with a crime. Even if a young child is convicted, they wouldn't be sent to an adult prison, Hammer said.

"Generally with young children they try to deal with it in the juvenile system," she said.

In 2000, 6-year-old Kayla Rolland, a Michigan first-grader, was fatally shot by a 6-year-old classmate who brought a gun from home. Last year, a 6-year-old kindergartner at a Houston elementary school accidentally fired a gun as he was showing it off to friends, injuring three students.

Bremerton Schools spokeswoman Patty Glaser said the school where Wednesday's shooting happened, with about 400 students, was open for classes Thursday with 10 counselors available to talk with teachers, students and parents.

Glaser said the classroom where the shooting took place remained closed and that the students from that classroom have been moved.

Aiming to become one of the giants of online advertising, ad retargeting startup AdRoll has hired Googler Suresh Khanna as its vice president of sales. In nearly six years at Google, Khanna held a number of roles. Most recently, he was director of new advertiser sales, where he says he led the North American team for acquiring mid-market and larger advertisers. Until now, Khanna says AdRoll hasn't had anyone focused on building out the sales team, so one of his big goals is to "attract rock stars." Indiana lawmaker says Girl Scouts target 'family values'

Indiana state Rep. Bob Morris, R-Fort Wayne, accuses the Girl Scouts of celebrating feminists, lesbians and communists.

There's an agenda behind those cookies the Girl Scouts sell, one bent on promoting communism, lesbianism and subverting "traditional American family values," according to an Indiana?lawmaker.

That's the reason Rep. Bob Morris, a Republican representing Fort Wayne, insists he won't go along with a resolution meant to honor the Girls Scouts on the organization's 100th anniversary.?

Morris owns a chain of nutrition stores, but it's not the fat and sugar in Girl Scout cookies that have him riled up.

"After talking to some well-informed constituents, I did a small amount of Web-based research, and what I found is disturbing," Morris wrote Saturday to?Republican House colleagues in a letter obtained by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

Morris alleged that the Girl Scouts of America and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts "have entered into a close strategic affiliation with Planned Parenthood," which he claimed is trying to "sexualiz(e) young girls through the Girl Scouts."

Even worse, he wrote, only three of the 50 role models promoted by the Girl Scouts have even "a briefly-mentioned religious background."

"All the rest are feminists, lesbians, or Communists," he wrote.

As proof, Morris notes that the "radically pro-abortion" Michelle Obama is honorary president of Girl Scouts of America, which "should give each of us reason to pause before our individual or collective endorsement of the organization."

After learning all this, he wrote, he pulled his two daughters out of the Girl Scouts and instead put them in American Heritage Girls Little Flowers, a parent-run group best described as a center for recovering Girl Scouts.

Michelle Tompkins, a spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts, responded to Morris' assertions by telling NBC station WISE of Fort Wayne, "Not only is Rep. Morris off the mark on his claims, it's also unfortunate in his limited research that he failed to discover that, since 1917, every first lady has served as the honorary leader of Girl Scouts, including Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush."

"We believe that leadership is about hearing from all sides of an issue before making up one's mind," Tompkins said. "We only wish we had the chance to speak with the freshman representative before he distributed his letter."

For its part, Planned Parenthood of Indiana called Morris' comments "inflammatory, misleading, woefully inaccurate and harmful," saying he'd insulted not only it but also the Girl Scouts and Obama.

"Planned Parenthood currently has no formal partnership with the Girl Scouts, but supports their mission and recognizes their century of contributions to our society," the organization said in a statement to NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemenis voted Tuesday to instate their U.S.-backed vice president as the new head of state tasked with steering the country out of a crisis created by an anti-government uprising that has raged for a year.

The vote can hardly be called an election as Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi is the only candidate. It is, however, a turning point for the impoverished Arab state, ending President Ali Abdullah Saleh's 33-year authoritarian rule.

Saleh is the fourth ruler to lose power in the Arab Spring uprisings. But to the chagrin of many protesters, he will likely remain in Yemen, where nothing bars him from political activity.

As part of a U.S.-backed deal brokered by Yemen's Gulf neighbors, Saleh is stepping down in exchange for a blanket immunity from prosecution. But the outgoing president, who over the years has built a strong web of tribal and family relations, could still hold considerable sway after Hadi is installed.

Saleh is now in the U.S. for medical treatment after an attack on his palace in June left him badly burned, and hastened his descent from power. He is expected to return to Yemen after the vote. Still, he addressed Yemenis through a message read out on state TV late Monday, urging them to vote and praising what he said was a new breed of politicians who were born out of the crisis. He also held out the possibility of an ongoing public role for himself, possibly through his longtime ruling party.

"I bid farewell to authority," Saleh said. "I will remain with you as a citizen loyal to his country, people and nation ... and will continue to serve the country and its just issues," he added.

His successor Hadi cast his vote at a polling station near his house in Sanaa. Indicating the still volatile security situation in Yemen, Hadi 's voting station was changed at the last minute because of reports of a bomb threat. Security around Hadi was tight.

"This is a qualitative leap for modern Yemen," Hadi said after voting. "There will be big political, economic and social change, which is the way out of the crisis that has ravaged the country."

Yemen is the poorest country in the Arab world, with a weak central government, a secessionist movement in the south, a rebellious Shiite community along the northern border with Saudi Arabia and one of the world's most active al-Qaida branches.

The U.S. had tried to cultivate Saleh as a partner in fighting al-Qaida, providing him with funds, drones, boats and training for Yemeni special forces while keeping a limited presence of U.S. military experts in the country for coordination and training. It has also thrown its support behind Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi in hopes he can and will help fight al-Qaida.

In a reminder of just how unstable Yemen still is, a voting station was also blown up in the southern city of Aden on Monday when gunmen fired a rocket-propelled grenade. Yemeni separatists in the south are lobbying against the vote.

On Tuesday, witnesses reported gunfire in a neighborhood in Aden. Adeeb al-Salani, a voter in Aden, said he couldn't reach the polling station because of the gunfire. He also said there was no security in the area.

But in Sanaa, voting was brisk.

Bushra al-Baadany came to the polling station with her young son.

"I am voting for Hadi as a new leader instead of Saleh because I want change," she said. "If Hadi is like Saleh, we are ready to have another revolution."

There are more than 10 million registered voters in this county of 24 million.

Yemenis first took to the streets to call for Saleh's ouster in January, 2011, inspired by the uprisings that toppled presidents in Tunisia and Egypt.

Since then, protesters have camped out in public squares and marched in huge numbers, despite crackdowns by Saleh's security forces that have killed more than 200 protesters. Hundreds more have died in armed clashes between armed groups and security forces.

Looking at concreting a hump on the outside to prevent the water, only needs to be a couple inches high. See photo , I have drilled in some reo bars and tied some across to help with strength. Any experience out there to help me . Thanks

Or is it really landing on the pad and leaking under the door? I run my slabs so right in front of the door is where the aprin begins. That way any water that lands there will be funneled away from the door. Poring a hump with there may do more harm then good. The reson being any blowing rain will run down the wall and door, the hump will act as a funnel to direct the water under the door.

Two years ago, I got an invitation to a holiday charity event called Teddy Bears for Kids to be hosted at the birthplace of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States of America. I was intrigued, and quickly turned to Google to find out more about this organization and it's connection to Roosevelt. I quickly learned that 'teddy' bears were named after the one and only Theodore (a.k.a. 'Teddy') Roosevelt.

The story goes that in 1902 President Roosevelt was bear hunting in Mississippi. During the hunt, the men he was hunting with had clubbed and tied a bear cub to a tree and suggested that the president shoot it. The president refused, claiming that it was unsportsmanlike to shoot a defenseless bear tied to a tree. He instead ordered that the poor beaten bear be put out of it's misery. The Washington Post caught wind of this incident and included a political cartoon of the President refusing to shoot the bear in the next days paper. A toy maker then saw the cartoon and was inspired to make a new toy -- a 'teddy' bear.

I had always thought of President Roosevelt as rugged and gruff man, known for his love of adventure and the great outdoors and his famous slogan -- "Speak softly and carry a big stick," So the thought of the first cuddly teddy bear, being modeled after him made me chuckle. Months later, my mom and I visited President Roosevelt's birthplace, which is a townhouse on East 20th Street in Manhattan. There you see the rooms in which he spent most of his childhood, along with a small museum of artifacts throughout his life, including the bloodied shirt (which he was wearing when he was shot mid-speech and continued on to finish his address before being looked at by a doctor) and one of the original hand-sewn, teddy bears. We also learned that President Roosevelt was a sickly child. He spent much of his youth in bed suffering from asthma. President Roosevelt's sickly beginnings are ironic given he spent so much of his adult life as an accomplished outdoors-man, eventually dying of malaria after a river expedition to South America. In order to pay homage to President Roosevelt's sickly beginnings, the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) started a Teddy Bear Gift Program, which gives children in hospitals teddy bears.

My mom, Sharon Bush, and I started a company called Teddy Share in 2008. Its mission is to educate and empower children to share with the world and support children's causes. After learning about the TRA's Teddy Bear Gift Program, we felt compelled to help and went to the Ronald McDonald House in New York City to see the program in action. There we met children who were suffering from a variety of ailments and illnesses, all playing bingo with their families by their sides. My mom and I, along with the other volunteers, were able to play bingo with the kids and help pass out teddy bears. The kids lit up when they received their cuddly new friends!

Through these experiences we were inspired to do more and worked with our other Teddy Share teammate Alexandra Weininger to create the 'Teddy for 2' Bear. For every teddy bear sold, another identical teddy bear is given to a child in a hospital. So this President's Day weekend, I would like to remember President 'Teddy' Roosevelt, and pay homage to his many legacies -- the teddy bear being one of them.
