Long-Distance Relationships Are Not So Bad? Now | The Hand

Posted by The Hand on June 27, 2012 in Relationships |

As someone whose last three relationships were all long-distance, with me living in New Jersey and all three of them living in California (I know, you don?t have to say a word), I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject. Now more than ever, couples are attempting to prove that love conquers all, even if that means living thousands of miles apart and rarely seeing each other. As a hopeless romantic, I believe (or at least I pray) that if two people love each other, they can get through any obstacles. But, as a realist, I know we all need companionship.

Although you will fight a lot less since you don?t see each other as often as most couples, you can only maintain a long-distance relationship for so long. However, my romantic side is writing this blog; therefore, I am going to give hope (and proof) to all those who are holding onto their long-distance relationships for dear life by letting you know that they are FAR easier to have in the present than they were in the past.

The technological age in which we are currently living connects us to each other on levels that, only fifty years ago, would have appeared to be reserved for the realm of science fiction. With e-mail, text messages, Skype and Face Time, we have instant access and communication to everyone, everywhere (as long as they are near a Wi-Fi hot spot). We have become spoiled by the access we have to each other. Now, we no longer have the excuses of the past, such as ?I had no way to get in touch with you,? which is a good or bad thing, depending on whether you were somewhere or doing something that you shouldn?t have been.

I have been successful (well, not very successful, since all of my long-distance relationships eventually ended) or at least as successful as someone can be at maintaining relationships that are almost destined to fail. My ability to make them last longer than they should is not because I am emotionally stronger, more stable, more romantic or even more understanding than the next person, but because I know my history (bet you didn?t expect that answer).

History reveals that, if long-distance relationships are difficult to be part of now, they had to be nearly impossible prior to technology. Imagine this: Prior to railroads and steamboats in the nineteenth century, correspondence between two people was limited to letters (you couldn?t even send erotic black and white photos yet) and delivered via horseback, which could take quite some time. This meant that, for over two hundred years in America, if two lovers were living on separate coasts, it would take two months to receive a response to letter from your initial letter, and that?s if it even arrives; there was a great chance your letter wouldn?t even reach its destination in the first place.

What?s worse is that by the time you would receive your reply (assuming you did receive it), your ?Dearest Love? could have already been married and pregnant by the time you found out you got dumped. Most of us get annoyed if we don?t receive a reply to a text in one minute or less, so it?s difficult to imagine having to wait two months for a response to a letter. We can pretty much assume that people had much more patience in the past ? or were much more desperate. But couples endured and, somehow, found the courage and saint-like patience needed to make it work, or they just cheated a lot figuring the other person would likely never find out.

Trains and steamboats did make the delivery process a little quicker and, although Morse?s telegraph was able to send messages through wire quickly, there?s just something about having to use ?Morse Code? to decipher a romantic or erotic letter from a lover that causes it to lose its passion and emotion. Actually, it probably felt as lazy and impersonal as receiving a very personal or important message via text message today.

However, long-distance relationships received a much-needed ray of sunshine when Bell patented the telephone in 1876. It was another fifty years until Americans began to have telephones in their homes and, although service was very limited; I have to believe they still had better reception than we do now (especially all of us iPhone customers). But at least with the telephone, people could hear their love?s voice, which has to have made things a little better. But, like letters, hearing a person will satisfy someone?s need for companionship for only so long.

In the past two decades, with the introduction of e-mail, social networks, texting (and, though I don?t approve, even ?sexting?) and, more importantly, Skype and Face Time, technology has made long-distance relationships more tolerable and possible. The only thing that could possibly improve the maintenance of long-distance relationships is virtual reality, which might not be too far into our future.

There is no doubt that as long as there have been relationships, there have been long-distance relationships, and technology has truly improved our ability to communicate across distances. From writing letters that would have taken a month to reach their destinations by horse, to having instant access to your boyfriend or girlfriend, regardless of where they may be, via Skype or Face Time (which is not a good thing for cheaters or liars), long-distance relationships, though still very difficult and not likely to last, have become much easier in the present. So, the next time ?distance? leads to a heated argument bringing you to the brink of breaking up, make your partner aware of the fact that ?Though it sucks, it?s still not nearly as bad as it was a hundred, or only fifty years ago.?

Developing a Multi Channel Customer Service Roadmap

Hi Doc Wallace here. Over the last few weeks we have talked about the changes and challenges affecting the customer service and contact centre industries.? We have talked about the impact that social media will have as a customer service channel on contact centres.? We have also presented compelling evidence supporting the need for organisations to adopt a multi-channel customer service strategy, whereby organisations effectively engage with customers through channels the customer wants to use.

?

In this final webinar I presented a methodology for developing a full multi channel customer service strategy.

?

We know from research that consumers are using multiple channels to engage with organizations.? In Canada and the US, customers have used an average of 3.5 different service channels in a three month period.? However, are they the right channels you need to be leveraging to offer your customer?s superior service?

?

During the webinar we presented a very compelling story as to why organizations need to develop multi channel customer service strategies.? Firstly, we highlighted that not all customer service channels are created equal in that customers do not currently receive the same level of service across each channel.? First contact query resolution rates in particular vary considerably across different channels.

?

1st Contact Query Resolution

Untitled.png

?

?

A further study conducted by Fifth Quadrant highlighted that organizations that are rated as having a mature enterprise-wide customer service strategy are significantly more likely to have implemented a multi-channel strategy that includes Social Networks, Social Network, Remote Assist, Online Forums, Web Chat, Click to Call and Mobile Apps as customer service channels.

?

Developing a multi-channel customer service strategy can be a complex challenge as channel choice can be influenced by many factors such as demographic characteristics, query type, the type of industry, consumer attitudes towards technology and so on.? What organizations need is a systematic framework and process to work through in order to deliver the most effective multi channel customer service strategy.

?

When developing an enterprise-wide customer service strategy have the following points top of mind:

?

  1. It must support the overarching strategic goals for the business
  2. Must be Customer-driven in design
  3. Must meet cost or ROI imperatives
  4. Should have the capability to deliver social and mobile channels
  5. Technology must be an enabler and not the architecture of the strategy
  6. HR designing and planning is as difficult and as important as process and technology design
  7. Integration of channels is key
  8. Knowledge management and analytics are the backbone to good strategy
  9. Measurement and reporting is essential.

?

The development of an integrated multi channel customer service strategy should result in the following business outcomes:

?

  1. Increased customer engagement, advocacy and loyalty
  2. Increased revenue generation
  3. Increased efficiencies
  4. Increased competitive advantage through service delivery.

?

Embarking on a true multi-channel service strategy is a complex and involved process. If it is conducted however, from a strategic framework, the chance of success is very high. If approached as an operational plan the risk of failure is high, as demonstrated by many organizations.

The first organizations to approach service in this strategic and integrated manner will have a considerable competitive advantage.

In case you missed the webinar a presentation from the session and the recording are now available for you to download.

Ancient Steppes Tribes History | International Education

The Eurasian Steppes tribes were a large group of people who had different cultures but shared the same ecoregion as their homeland. The steppe area is generally known to stretch from Romania through Mongolia or present-day Ukraine and Siberia, with parts existing in Hungary. Connecting Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe in economic and political ways, it has been a dynamic and influential hub throughout ancient history.

There were 8 main tribes of people who lived in Steppes, and most of them were horsemen. Horses were first domesticated before 3000 B.C., but it is known when exactly they were fully utilized by these nomads.

Here you will discover an introduction to these tribes and their culture. These groups consisted of the Huns, Kimmerians, Kushans, Parthians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Xiongnu, and Yuezhi. Most of these were nomadic, traveling great distances throughout their time in history.

History of Steppe Languages

It is theorized that the common ancestor of the Steppe tribe languages came from somewhere in Russia, but it has been found that all settlements west of Dzungaria were speaking Iranian languages until 500 A.D. Turkic languages eventually replaced the Iranian ones at this time, but it is not clearly understood why.

Trade in the Steppe Tribes

The Silk Road was one of the most famous routes of trade in the Steppe Tribes history, which started in the Guanzhong area of China. This ran all the way to the Tarim Basin along the Gansu Corridor and then further southwest to Greater Iran. At this point it turned in a southeast direction to India and west to Europe and the Middle East. Additionally, a branch was found going northwest near the Caspian Sea and northward to the Black Sea.

Trade was at its strongest when empires were in control of the steppe. This limited how many nomadic tribe people could find their way on to the route to tax it or steal whatever was passing through. An example of this is when the Chinese Emperor Wu of Han exerted his power.

Steppe Tribe Warfare

As horsemen tribes, the Steppe peoples engaged in warfare that was supported with supplies of their animals and land armies. Villages were often raided when on horse, since they could escape with the loot easily. In the case that a smaller tribe would attempt this and be faced with more serious numbers of a land army, they could retreat quickly with no concern. For these reasons, many tribes decided to place walls around their settlements to protect their people, land and resources.

How Animals Can Help With Senior Care

When it comes to senior care, animal therapy can provide significant benefits that few types of medical or other therapeutic strategies can rival. However, a large amount of the recorded improvements observed during interactions between seniors and animals remain unexplained. Nevertheless, it's not something that needs explaining; for many people, animal therapy just works, and it might work for your elderly family members as well. The following are 5 ways that pet therapy for seniors can improve their quality of life.

1.) Companionship

One of the biggest difficulties facing the elderly is loneliness. In fact, many people believe that because humans are such highly social creatures, loneliness can actually lead to a decline in emotional and physical health. Animal companionship fills this empty gap in a senior's life. If cared for properly, animals can provide constant companionship, affection, and in some cases even improve mobility issues by helping a person stay active.

2.) Keep Busy/Distraction

Elderly people with dementia or chronic pain can benefit from animal therapy because the interaction with a pet can help to distract them from their discomfort and focus their mind on other things. Animals provide plenty of reason to do more than just watch television, stare out the window or sleep. In fact, because animals are sometimes known to be able to sense emotional upset or physical discomfort, they may actively seek to engage their owners when they sense this, providing reassurance and a warm, welcome distraction.

3.) Healthy Routines

As we age the routines that we keep tend to change. With kids no longer in the home and in some cases no spouse or other family to care for, the elderly sometimes stop following any routine at all -- an unhealthy choice as the mind and body need to stay active in order to maintain their functions.

Like humans, animals also function well with a routine. They need to be taken out to relieve themselves, fed, groomed and interacted with on a regular, several-times-a-day basis. When an elderly person has a pet, they often find it much easier to maintain a routine because they MUST do so in order to care for their animals.

The need to care for other living beings is a critical human need, so a pet-related routine shouldn't be looked at as a hindrance or bother -- it could prove extremely beneficial because it will allow the pet owner to have something to care about/for again, giving new meaning to their life.

4.) Emotional & Physical Connection

A common problem with many seniors is withdrawal from relationships and social interaction; especially when dementia is present. Having an animal or taking part in pet therapy can help to mitigate this serious concern, as seniors often take readily to animals whereas they may withdraw even from people they have known their entire lives. Having emotional connections is critical for sound mental health.

Additionally, just the act of petting or playing with a pet can provide that critical need that all humans have for physical affection with a being that they care about.

5.) Longer Life

Many studies and a great deal of anecdotal evidence suggest that people who have pets live longer. This seems to be especially true in the case of elderly people, as keeping a routine, having companionship and an emotional connection with an animal can help to improve their physical health. And if their health improves, then it's likely that they'll live longer, better-quality lives.

PERSONAL FINANCE LUMINARY SERIES

Back at the genesis of this blog, I decided to profile personal finance bloggers I admired. This initiative fell by the wayside after my first interview with Flexo of Consumerism Commentary. Please enjoy this return to a promising series with wonderful money making tactics from Kyle, The Penny Hoarder.

MAKE MONEY- credit; google images nthblogger dot com

One of the coolest parts of being a personal finance blogger is ?virtually? meeting folks from across the country and internationally. One of my favorite on-line friends is Kyle, the Penny Hoarder. Kyle gave me some wonderful money making opportunities, and I want you to benefit as well.

According to Kyle?s bio, he is a guy who started his entrepreneurial ways while a kid in his living room,

??Instead of playing with ?Power Rangers? like the rest of my friends, I used play time to try and convince my family members to invest in my conglomerate of?make-believe?banks and equity markets that I was running in the living room.?

I?m not certain how much those activities paid off for Kyle, but his subsequent venture led to real money for his family:

?When I was 15 I started clipping coupons to help my mom pay the grocery bill. I joined a few coupon trading groups and started vigorously looking for new ways to cut costs. Our grocery bill quickly fell until it was under $20 a week.?

The Penny Hoarder is filled with contests, offers, coupons, and money making strategies. Follow his work and boost your cash flow.

Wacky Ways to Increase Your Cash Flow

Although many of Kyle?s cash creating schemes are ?out of the box? you are certain to find something that will work for you. I recommend trying one or two to boost your bottom line. In fact, in our condominium community there is a car wrapped in a ?Carfax? logo. It costs $50.00 per month to purchase a parking space, so he must be making quite a bit more than that, just to have his car covered in an advertisement.

Here are a sample of money making ideas from The Penny Hoarder:

  1. Make money playing games-This one is for the laziest of you out there :) . The Penny Hoarder listed a ton of ideas to recoup your wasted hours playing games. Give one or two a try and let me know how they work out.
  2. Carefully, use credit card company offers to your advantage. This AMEX card in particular gives you $25.00 when you load $200.00 onto an?American Express prepaid card. Act quickly on this one, it expires at the end of the month.
  3. Try a side hustle, buying and selling textbooks online. I?m not sure you could actually make $750.00 per month as Kyle suggests, but for those with more time than money and a bit of ingenuity, there is money to be made.
  4. Selling unwanted coupons is only one of the seven unusual tips in this make money article. As in many of the strategies recommended, one alone won?t make you rich, but bunch together several money making ideas and you can make a dent in your bills.
  5. Check out the job board on the website for more ways to boost your bottom line.

Don?t miss my suggestions for extra cash in 25 Ways to Make Extra Money.

Ingenuity, creativity, and hard work leads to extra cash. Good luck with your money making efforts!

How do you earned extra money? List your tips and suggestions in the comments section.

Egypt's Brotherhood urges fast election results

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood's candidate for president has urged Egyptian authorities to release the results of the weekend's election as soon as possible, warning against manipulating the "popular will."

Mohammed Morsi said Friday a front is forming against a series of moves by the military council that threaten to curtail the powers of the next president. He appeared at a news conference alongside a group of public figures and youth representatives, adding pressure on the ruling generals.

The Brotherhood declared Morsi the winner in a runoff election for president just hours after polls closed this Sunday. That claim was contested by Morsi's rival, Ahmed Shafiq, ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Egypt's ruling military council on Friday blamed the Muslim Brotherhood for raising tensions by releasing presidential election results early ? and defended decisions granting itself sweeping powers.

The military statement came as tens of thousands rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square to support the Brotherhood's candidate for president, Mohammed Morsi. The protesters also denounced what they perceive as the military's power grab that strips the next leader of much of his authority.

The demonstration in midday heat Friday, the largest in four straight days of protests, showed the potential explosiveness of the situation in Egypt.

The Brotherhood declared Morsi the winner in a runoff election for president just hours after polls closed this Sunday. That claim was contested by Morsi's rival, Ahmed Shafiq, who was ousted President Hosni Mubarak' s last prime minister.

The military council said in a sternly worded statement read out on state TV Friday that raising doubts about the future of Egypt is a means to pressure public opinion.

"Announcing the results of the presidential election early, before the official statement, is unjustified and is one of the main reasons behind the division and confusion prevailing on the political scene," said the statement, without naming the Brotherhood.

The official results of the election were to be announced Thursday, but authorities postponed that, setting off a wave of accusations of fraud and manipulation aimed at all sides, including the ruling military.

The generals last week issued a constitutional declaration that gave them wide powers, many of which would have been wielded by the newly elected president. International condemnation followed, saying the decision raised doubts about the military's commitment to transferring powers to an elected civilian authority.

The military has said it would hand over power by July 1, but the generals have called that into question in recent weeks because of political uncertainties.

The council said its constitutional declaration was needed in order for the military to run the country's affairs during this "critical period."

The military council also rebuffed calls to reinstate the Brotherhood-dominated parliament, which was dissolved by a court ruling last week. The military statement said court decisions must be respected.

The military warned that any attempt to "harm public and private interests" would draw a "firm" response, suggesting it would not tolerate violent protests.

Most of the demonstrators in the downtown Cairo square on Friday were Muslim Brotherhood members and backers ? unlike the mostly secular and liberal protesters who dominated the popular revolution. They were joined by a few liberal groups that have long protested against the generals, accusing them of mismanaging the transition.

Similar protests were held in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city.

Before leading Friday prayers in the Cairo square, cleric Mazhar Shaheen said Morsi was the clear winner in the election.

"From here, we tell Morsi we ask him to be president for all Egyptians ? those who voted for him and those who didn't ? and to reach out to Muslims and Christians. He is president for all," the cleric told the crowd from a podium in the square. About 10 percent of Egypt's 80 million people are Christians.

Late Thursday, Shafiq repeated his claim of victory and charged that the Brotherhood was "playing games" and striking "backdoor deals" with outside powers to influence the results.

Shafiq denounced the Brotherhood's public appeals. "These protests in the squares and fear-mongering campaigns in the media are all aimed at putting pressure on the election commission," he said.

By the Brotherhood's count, Morsi took 52 percent of the vote to Shafiq's 48 percent. The claim was based on the group's own compilation of election officials' returns from nearly all polling centers. The Brotherhood's early partial counts proved generally accurate in last month's first round of the presidential election.

Shafiq rejected those figures.

The Brotherhood said Morsi met Thursday with representatives of different revolutionary groups and public figures in an attempt to rally support against the military's moves, which they called a "military coup."

Morsi also consulted by phone with Mohamed ElBaradei, a pro-democracy leader, a prominent Brotherhood figure, Mohammed el-Beltagy, wrote on his Facebook page. ElBaradei, a secular leader, was seen as a major spark of last year's popular uprising. He has had little contact with the Brotherhood since.

"We are on the verge of a new phase to reformulate a unifying national project," el-Beltagy wrote.

Shall we play a game? WarGames: WOPR may be the best 99 cents you spend all week

WarGames: WOPR

WarGames: WOPR.Any self-respecting nerd out there has seen WarGames at least 30 times. If not, hit up Netflix and come back when you're appropriately familiar with Joshua and the WOPR and Global Thermonuclear War. (And that applies to those of you too young to have ever seen the 1983 Matthew Broderick/Ally Sheedy flick.)

WarGames: WOPR brings the characters and rough storyline of the movie to your Android (and iOS) phones and tablets. The game itself is a basic puzzle game -- you make strings of three or more objects to remove them from the board. But you also have to defeat an opponent. You're the WOPR, playing against characters from the film. Launch missiles to beat them, collect cash, and basically try to destroy the planet in simulation. There are power-ups to be purchased along the way, and you'll have to snag them wisely to beat the latter levels. (And, of course, there's in-app purchasing to get more in-game cash so you can get the upgrades quicker.)

I've been surprisingly entertained by WarGames: WOPR. Maybe it's the fun of seeing the characters again. Maybe it's the sound effects, which have been pulled straight from the film. Maybe it's just the nerd in me remembering how cool it was to pretend we could use our modems to dial in (kids -- have your parents explain) to some strange company and learn its secrets. Or change our grades.

Either way, this might well by the best buck you spend this week. And unlike the message of the movie, where the only winning move was not to play, you're going to have a hard time putting this one down.

We've got a slew of in-game screen shots for you after the break.

AP sources: US mulls new covert raids in Pakistan

(AP) ? U.S. military and intelligence officials are so frustrated with Pakistan's failure to stop local militant groups from attacking Americans in neighboring Afghanistan that they have considered launching secret joint U.S.-Afghan commando raids into Pakistan to hunt them down, officials told The Associated Press.

But the idea, which U.S. officials say comes up every couple of months, has been consistently rejected because the White House believes the chance of successfully rooting out the deadly Haqqani network would not be worth the intense diplomatic blowback from Pakistan that inevitably would ensue.

Members of the Haqqani tribe have been targeted by pilotless U.S. drone aircraft, but sending American and Afghan troops into Pakistan would be a serious escalation of the hunt for terrorists and potentially the final straw for Pakistan, already angered over what it sees as U.S. violations of its sovereignty.

The al-Qaida-allied Haqqani tribe runs a mafia-like smuggling operation and occasionally turns to terrorism with the aim of controlling its territory in eastern Afghanistan. The Haqqanis use Pakistani towns to plan, train and arm themselves with guns and explosives, cross into Afghanistan to attack NATO and Afghan forces, then retreat back across the border to safety.

The latest round of debate over whether to launch clandestine special operations raids into Pakistan against the Haqqanis came after the June 1 car bombing of Forward Operating Base Salerno in eastern Afghanistan that injured up to 100 U.S. and Afghan soldiers, according to three current and two former U.S. officials who were briefed on the discussions. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the still-evolving debates.

The officials told the AP that recent discussions of clandestine ground attacks have included Gen. John Allen, the senior U.S. commander in Afghanistan, as well as top CIA and special operations officials.

Allen's spokesman, Navy Cmdr. Brook DeWalt, said Allen "has not and does not intend to push for a cross-border operation."

The White House and the CIA declined to comment for this story.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said the U.S. was still focused on U.S.-Pakistan cooperation.

"The key is to work together with Pakistan to find ways of fighting terrorists who threaten both the United States and Pakistan, including along the Afghan-Pakistan border, where extremists continue to plot attacks against coalition forces and innocent civilians," he said.

The U.S. relationship with Pakistan is arguably at its lowest point over the continuation of drone strikes to hit terror targets in Pakistan, the successful Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden that was carried out without a heads-up to the country's leaders and the U.S. refusal to apologize for a border skirmish in which the U.S. mistakenly killed 24 Pakistani troops. On Thursday, the State Department's inspector general accused the Pakistani government of harassing U.S. Embassy personnel.

Pakistan has done little in response to repeated U.S. requests for a crackdown on the Haqqanis, and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta surprisingly voiced that frustration in a visit to Kabul this month.

He said the U.S. was "reaching the limits" of its patience with Pakistan's failure to tackle the tribe's safe havens. He added that the U.S. was "extraordinarily dissatisfied with the effect that Pakistan has had on the Haqqanis." He also made fun of Pakistan's ignorance over the bin Laden raid at a speech in India, Pakistan's archrival.

Pakistan's army has attacked militant strongholds across the tribal areas, except for North Waziristan, where the Haqqanis hold sway and shelter both al-Qaida and Taliban militants. Pakistani officials say that they intend to hit North Waziristan but that their army is too overstretched to move as fast as the U.S. demands.

Pakistani officials have conceded privately, however, that they have been reluctant to take on the powerful tribe for fear of retaliatory strikes.

To make up for Pakistan's inaction, the CIA's covert drone program has targeted Haqqani leaders, safe houses, bomb factories and training camps inside Pakistan, and special operations raids have hit Haqqani targets on the Afghan side of the border, but that has failed to stop Haqqani attacks on U.S. and Afghan troops and civilian targets.

The officials say Allen expressed frustration that militants would attack and then flee across the border in Pakistan, immediately taking shelter in urban areas where attacking them by missile fire could kill civilians.

The officials say options that have been prepared for President Barack Obama's review included raids that could be carried out by U.S. special operations forces together with Afghan commandos, ranging from air assaults that drop raiders deep inside the tribal areas to hit top leaders to shorter dashes only a few miles into Pakistan territory.

The shorter raids would not necessarily be covert, as they could be carried out following the U.S. military principle known as "hot pursuit" that military officials say entitles their forces to pursue a target that attacks them in Afghanistan up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) inside a neighboring country's territory.

The U.S. has staged two major raids and other minor forays into Pakistan's tribal territory before during the George W. Bush administration; the most contentious was in September 2008 when Navy SEALs raided an al-Qaida compound. The operators killed their target, but the ensuing firefight triggered a diplomatic storm with Pakistan.

Rather than fly in, which U.S. military planners at the time feared would alert the Pakistanis, the SEALs marched across the mountainous border, arriving later than planned because of the harsh terrain and just as the fighters were waking for morning prayers, according to one current and one former U.S. official. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the clandestine operation.

Everyone inside the targeted compound opened fire on the SEALs, including the women, one of whom lightly wounded one of the American operators. The firefight also woke the entire village, which joined in the battle, so the SEALs had to call for strafing runs by Black Hawk helicopters to beat them back.

At least one woman and one child were among the many dead.

Palm Coast Mayor sees boon in regionality

BUNNELL -- Growing connections between Flagler and Volusia counties are a good thing for municipalities, at least according to Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts.

Speaking at a "Meet the Mayors" forum at the Flagler County Association of Realtors on Monday, Netts said the March designation by the U.S. Census Bureau of the Palm Coast/Daytona Beach/Port Orange urban area offers a regional approach to local issue.

"It is obvious we are talking about regionality," he said. "We can jointly look for answers to problems that we face."

Netts said Flagler County's jobless rate is one such regional problem.

Acknowledging the county's high unemployment rate, Netts said the solution goes beyond Flagler County's borders.

"A fact that we don't often talk about is that 40 percent of the unemployed in Flagler County never worked here," he said.

Cambodia arrests Frenchman linked to China scandal

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia ?

Cambodian police have arrested a Frenchman reportedly linked to a politician at the center of China's biggest political scandal in years.

Cambodian authorities informed the French Embassy in Phnom Penh of the arrest of Patrick Devillers, embassy spokeswoman Laurence Bernardi said Tuesday. She said no reason was given and the embassy was seeking an explanation from the Cambodian government.

It was unclear whether Devillers' arrest was related to China's ongoing investigation into Bo Xilai, the former Communist Party chief of the Chinese city of Chongqing who was dismissed in April.

Bo's ouster came after his former police chief fled to a U.S. consulate and divulged suspicions that Bo's wife Gu Kailai was involved in the death last November of a British businessman, Neil Heywood.

Bo has since been subject to a wide-ranging investigation into unspecified malfeasance, while his wife has been named a suspect in Heywood's murder.

Several businesspeople and former government officials with links to Bo have reportedly been detained for alleged corruption and abuse of power.

News reports have said that Devillers was closely linked to Bo, Gu and Heywood. It is not clear if he is accused of any crimes in China or elsewhere.

Phnom Penh police chief Gen. Touch Naruth confirmed Devillers' arrest but declined to provide further information.

Calls to the Chinese Foreign Ministry rang unanswered Tuesday night.

Devillers, an architect, had helped Bo rebuild the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian when he was the city's mayor in the 1990s, The New York Times reported last month.

The Frenchman and Gu were partners in setting up a company in Britain in 2000 to select European architects for Chinese projects and both gave the same address of an apartment in the English city of Bournemouth, the newspaper said.

It cited an unidentified friend of Devillers as saying the architect left China in 2005 and has been living in Cambodia more or less continuously for about six years.

China has considerable influence in Cambodia, having provided millions of dollars in aid over the past decade.

In 2009, Cambodia deported 20 members of the Uighur ethnic minority group who said they were fleeing ethnic violence in China's far west and wanted asylum.
