"Thanks to our generous sponsors and contributors, PP&R leveraged $5.50 in cash and in-kind sponsorship for every dollar the city's general fund contributed to the program," spokesman Mark Ross wrote in a release.
The program includes the Washington Park Summer Festival, Movies in the Park, Concerts in the Park, Summer Playgrounds, free swimming lessons and other events.
Among the highlights:
? This summer, more than 1,500 people attended a Movies in the Park event than last summer, for a total estimated attendance of 43,325.
? The Concerts in the Park program saw a big jump in attendance -- 7,600 -- up to a total 39,200. The number of sponsors also rose, from 147 to 207. Thirteen volunteer concert committees raised $150,000 for the neighborhood events, and Northeast Portland's Glenhaven Park volunteer committee raised every penny to cover the cost of its first concert.
? The Washington Park Summer Festival added an 11th day and another 2,000 people this year, making the total attendance 24,000.
? The Summer Playgrounds partnership with school districts, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Hunger-Free Oregon served 99,121 free lunches to needy kids.
? Rock climbing walls and free swimming lessons proved popular, too. The total climbs -- 33,599 -- was up more than 2,600 from the summer before. And 3,062 swimmers got free instruction. That's 200 more than last summer.
