Just installed AVG Internet Security 2013 in workstations in a small-business environment, and using it for the first time. I'm dissatisfied by the lack of good, technical support information in the help section and the amount of abstract concepts such as "Identity Protection", or, misleadingly described and ambigous "Use DNS update" option.

The documentation (Help file) should include more advanced description of the program functionality, specifying the levels and areas of protection in more detailed, technical fashion - what filesystem, system resources & components are monitored, what monitoring mechanisms are used, etc.

Hubble sees violent star formation episodes in dwarf galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the faint irregular galaxy NGC 3738, a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is in the midst of a violent episode of star formation, during which it is converting reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the galaxy's center into stars. Hubble spots this gas glowing red around NGC 3738, one of the most distinctive signs of ongoing star formation.

Lying in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), NGC 3738 is located about 12 million light-years from the sun, and belongs to the Messier 81 group of galaxies. This galaxy -- first observed by astronomer William Herschel back in 1789 -- is a nearby example of a blue compact dwarf, the faintest type of starburst galaxy. Blue compact dwarfs are small compared to large spiral galaxies -- NGC 3738 is around 10,000 light-years across, just one tenth of the size of the Milky Way.

This type of galaxy is blue in appearance by virtue of containing large clusters of hot, massive stars, which ionize the surrounding interstellar gas with their intense ultraviolet radiation. They are relatively faint and appear to be irregular in shape. Unlike spirals or elliptical galaxies, irregular galaxies do not have any distinctive features, such as a nuclear bulge or spiral arms. Rather, they are extremely chaotic in appearance. These galaxies are thought to resemble some of the earliest that formed in the Universe and may provide clues as to how stars appeared shortly after the Big Bang.

This image was created by combining visual and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The field of view of the Wide Field Channel is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes wide.

Al Qaeda's Zawahri calls for kidnap of Westerners

DUBAI (Reuters) - Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri has called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners, join Syria's rebellion and to ensure Egypt implements sharia, SITE Monitoring reported on Saturday, citing a two-part film posted on Islamist websites.

The Egypt-born cleric, who became al Qaeda leader last year after the death of Osama bin Laden, spoke in a message that lasted more than two hours.

"We are seeking, by the help of Allah, to capture others and to incite Muslims to capture the citizens of the countries that are fighting Muslims in order to release our captives," he said, praising the kidnapping of Warren Weinstein, a 71-year-old American aid worker in Pakistan last year.

Zawahri's message was first released on Wednesday, SITE said, just two weeks after the cleric issued a filmed statement calling for more protests against the United States over a California-made film mocking the Prophet Mohammad.

In his new message, he called on Muslims to ensure Egypt's revolution continued until sharia law was implemented and urged fellow Muslims to join the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

The release of his message had been delayed, he said, because of the "conditions of the fierce war" in Afghanistan and Pakistan where he said U.S.-led forces had intensified a bombing campaign.

U.S. President Barack Obama, whom Zawahri described as a "liar" and "one of the biggest supporters of Israel", has stepped up the use of unmanned drones to target militants in both countries as well as in Yemen.

"A LICENCE TO KILL"

In a further attack on Western governments and international institutions, Zawahri accused world powers of giving Syrian President Assad "a license to kill" his opponents.

"The U.N., Kofi Annan and the Arab League give the al-Assad regime one opportunity after another to end the rising of jihadi, popular resistance against his oppression, injustice, corruption and spoiling," SITE reported Zawahri as saying.

Syria's anti-government rebels include Islamist groups that draw on foreign fighters.

"I incite Muslims everywhere, especially in the countries that are contiguous to Syria, to rise up to support their brothers in Syria with all what they can and not to spare anything that they can offer," he said.

Zawahri, who led the Egyptian Islamic Jihad movement before joining al Qaeda, called on President Mohamed Mursi, the country's new Islamist leader, to explain his policies on Israel, Egyptian Christians and sharia law.

Islamist militants want Egypt to introduce sharia and to tear up a 1979 peace treaty with Israel and were dismayed when Mursi said he would appoint a Coptic Christian vice president.

"The battle in Egypt is very clear. It is a battle between the secular minority that is allied with the church and that is leaning on the support of the army, who are made up by (former President Hosni) Mubarak and the Americans ... and the Muslim ummah (nation) in Egypt that is seeking to implement sharia," he said.

Ivory Coast illegally arrested, tortured more than 200: Amnesty

ABIDJAN (Reuters) - Police and soldiers in Ivory Coast have illegally detained and tortured more than 200 people including supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo, following a series of armed attacks that began in August, Amnesty International said on Friday.

U.N. investigators said earlier this month that exiled members of Gbagbo's former government and military living in neighboring Ghana were behind the raids, which have targeted police and army installations as well as key infrastructure.

Gbagbo is awaiting trial in The Hague accused of crimes against humanity related to a brief war last year that erupted after he refused to accept the election victory of rival Alassane Ouattara in a late 2010 poll.

More than 3,000 people were killed in the conflict.

"While acknowledging that the ... government is facing a wave of attacks, we are very worried that the current arrests and repression stem from a willingness for reprisals and revenge," Amnesty West Africa researcher Gaetan Mootoo said.

Ivory Coast's government rejected the accusations made in a statement released by Amnesty on Friday.

"These are not at all the practices of our government. We do things legally," government spokesman Bruno Kone told Reuters.

"There have been attacks, and it is our mission to protect Ivorian citizens and stop this. This is what we are doing," he said.

Leading members of Gbagbo's FPI political party who have remained in Ivory Coast deny being involved in the violence and complain that Ouattara's government is using the attacks as an excuse for a crackdown on the opposition.

Two of the FPI's top officials have been arrested, and the party says dozens of rank-and-file members have been rounded up.

Amnesty researchers identified detention sites, including a military barracks in the commercial capital Abidjan, where those arrested were brought and often held incommunicado.

"We were able to meet dozens of detainees who told us how they have been tortured by electricity or had molten plastic poured on their bodies. Two of them have been sexually abused," Mootoo said.

Serge Herve Kribie, who was arrested by the army in the town of San Pedro on August 21, was stripped naked, tied to a pole, and subjected to electric shocks, Amnesty said. He died a few hours later, the group said.

A police officer also died as a result of torture, the researchers said.

Some detainees have been held for months with no contact to their families or lawyers, Amnesty said. Others have been held for ransom by security personnel who released them in exchange for cash, it said.

"More than 18 months after the arrest of Laurent Gbagbo in April 2011, it's high time for President Alassane Dramane Ouattara to go beyond promises and put the respect of human rights at the top of his government's agenda," Amnesty said.

Cloud Atlas Review | We Got This Covered

 Cloud Atlas Review

Allow me to offer a piece of advice: If you intend on seeing Cloud Atlas this weekend, you must be willing to enter the theatre with an open heart.

Having an open mind goes without saying, of course, as it is a base requirement for enjoying or interpreting most art. Open hearts, on the other hand, are harder to come by, for emotions are often much more difficult to process than thoughts. We find the ethereal, inexplicable nature of feelings challenging, and the emotions that hit closest to home are wont to cause us discomfort. Modern movie audiences are, I would argue, more willing to try wrapping their heads around the intellectually or narratively complex than they are to open themselves up to cinematic expressions of raw, genuine emotion.

Cloud Atlas contains both, but leans towards the latter. This is a film that bears its heart on its sleeve, a film that offers, without irony or restraint, an impassioned portrait of humanity?s existential beauty, a beauty disconnected from conventional limits of mortality or bourgeois reserve. Through their art, writers/directors Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer bare their hearts and souls with such strength and conviction that those conditioned to be emotionally closeted in the movie theatre will be immediately alienated. One must not necessarily agree with the filmmakers? belief in the power of love or fleeting nature of death to enjoy Cloud Atlas, but one must be willing to accept and internalize the complex, challenging feelings created by the drama before engaging in any sort of critical discussion with the work itself. Those who reject Cloud Atlas outright will not do so for the story mechanics or stylistic audacity, I wager, but because the heartfelt, emotional ideology behind the storytelling will prove too raw and strong-spirited.

No matter. Cloud Atlas is a staggering masterpiece, a positively inspired piece of filmmaking that blows the lid off cinematic convention and uses unparalleled artistry to tell a story that encompasses the whole of human experience. It is not just the most ambitious and revolutionary film of 2012, but the best of the year to date, and one of the most singularly unique and powerful cinematic milestones of the modern era.

The film takes place in six separate time periods, each with their own narrative and characters, although many of the same actors ? including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, and Hugo Weaving ? appear in every section, often in heavy prosthetics, sometimes cast in a different ethnicity or gender than their own. Each story conforms to a distinct genre ? Broadbent stars in a screwball comedy, Berry in a 1970s detective noir, Hanks in a post-apocalyptic epic, etc. ? each has unique aesthetics and production design ? ranging from simple 19th century historical accuracy to complex, futuristic sci-fi dystopia ? and each is so thoroughly detailed and rich with life that they could all function spectacularly as standalone shorts.

Yet as different as each period, style, story, or character may appear on the surface, Cloud Atlas is all about emphasizing similarity. The tales are not told separately, but intercut, often at a rapid, instinctual pace that highlights thematic connections among the narratives. When a familiar actor appears in a new part, we automatically start drawing comparisons, or begin pondering the significance of this individual?s recurrence throughout history. As the film moves along, more literal connections are drawn, as characters from one time learn the history of those from another, or one person?s actions in the past influence an individual?s choices in the future.

 Cloud Atlas Review

The film is almost impossible to explain or deconstruct through written analysis, for it relies so heavily on visual and aural form that the most meaningful interpretations will happen in the theatre, as the viewer finds intellectual and, more importantly, emotional connections in the stories that lead to broader, more significant truths. The film has innumerable topics on its mind, from the power of storytelling in all its various forms ? writing, filmmaking, music, etc. ? to the healing, eternal nature of love to, at its very core, a broad and existential conversation about the ripple effects our lives leave behind.

The film preaches no particular religion or set philosophy, but is instead built around what I see as a fairly universal certainty: That we are affected by forces of the past, and that our decisions in life will long outlive us, no matter how small they may seem in the moment. That no life is truly insignificant, for everything we do directly influences someone else, and the chain reactions we start each day give birth to forces much larger than ourselves. That at our very best, we can each make a tremendous, positive difference in the lives of others, both in our own time and throughout the grand, macrocosmic scale of history.

When everything is tied together in the last half hour, and Tykwer and the Wachowskis land their biggest, most devastating and uplifting punches, I found the experience almost unbearably emotional. I say you must watch this film with an open heart because the filmmakers have truly laid it all on the line, have opened their hearts as fully as possible and offered an artistic window into their own deep-seated beliefs on love, life, death, friendship, and so much more. It is rare I see filmmakers work so hard to hide so little, to use cinematic expression to its fullest to relate such intensely personal thoughts, feelings, and philosophies.

That Lana Wachowski in particular has chosen this moment in her career to go public with her gender transition is not a coincidence; Cloud Atlas is built on discussions of identity, acceptance, and equality, and I can scarcely imagine the bravery and artistic clarity it took her to express, in dramatic, narrative terms, the complex yet inspiring worldview of her life?s journey. Few films are made with such heartfelt, blinding passion as Cloud Atlas, and fewer works still are this clear, coherent, and impactful.

cloud atlas 2 Cloud Atlas Review

The film is also, of course, an absolutely stunning technical achievement, the kind of revolutionary step forward that cinema experiences only once in a great while. Not only is every time period a fully realized triumph unto itself ? from period settings to complex, detailed futures ? but through some of the most impressive editing I have ever seen, Tykwer and the Wachowskis tie it all together in one fluid, lucid stream of cinematic consciousness. There is a grand, visceral pleasure in absorbing the film?s remarkable editing style, as we cut throughout human history, past and present, with music, narration, or dialogue linking the scenes. Has any other film ever given this much thought to the spatial relations of time? It seems like an intuitive impossibility, and yet by the thirty-minute mark, it feels like a bold new frontier of cinematic language has been both discovered and perfected.

Tykwer composed the music for the film, alongside Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek, and it is easily the most accomplished score of the year. Music is literally ingrained into the fabric of the film, as the chief composition ? the ?Cloud Atlas Sextet? ? exists in the film?s diegesis, a work of Ben Whishaw?s Robert Frobisher that other characters hear throughout the eons. It is a truly gorgeous, heart-wrenching piece of music, and is surrounded by equally powerful material. The synergy created by the music, visuals, and editing is simply transcendent.

The acting too is magnificent, each member of the ensemble performing without fear or ego and seamlessly transforming themselves into a piece of the film?s artistic tapestry. Every major actor plays two or more roles ? Tom Hanks and Hugo Weaving each master at least six, with Jim Sturgess and Jim Broadbent not far behind ? and no matter the amount of makeup or difficulty of the part, nobody turns in anything less than stellar, career-defining work. I struggle to remember a time when Hanks has ever been this daring or provocative ? and I say that as someone who loves the actor dearly ? but as much attention as he shall no doubt receive, it?s Broadbent and Whishaw who are the clearest highlights; the latter declares himself a major dramatic force to be reckoned with in the film?s most compelling role, and the former pushes his own considerable abilities to new, touching heights.

When one watches as many films as I do, it is easy to start sensing a general ?sameness? in everything one sees, whether it is good or bad, and to fool oneself into believing that there are limits to what the medium can accomplish. But Cloud Atlas is truly original and wildly accomplished on every conceivable level, as innovative, unique, and extraordinary a cinematic experience as I have ever witnessed. It is the sort of modern movie miracle I can forever point to when I feel my faith in film shaken, the kind of bold and beautiful artistic statement that all filmmakers should strive for when given a major, high-budget opportunity. By nearly every measure I can think of, technically, thematically, and emotionally, Cloud Atlas is a rousing, astonishing triumph, and the best film to hit theatres so far this year.

Economic growth ticks up in third quarter

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the third quarter data on the nation's economy, and discussing its impact on the markets, with CNBC's Steve Liesman.

By Reuters

Economic growth picked up in the third quarter as a late burst in consumer spending offset the first cutbacks in investment in more than a year by cautious businesses.

The stronger pace of expansion, however, fell short of what is needed to make much of a dent in unemployment, and offers little cheer for the White House ahead of the closely contested November 6 presidential election.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.0 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Friday, accelerating from the second quarter's 1.3 percent pace. A pace in excess of 2.5 percent is needed over several quarters to make substantial headway cutting the jobless rate.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected a 1.9 percent growth pace in the third quarter. The report comes a little more than a week before the election in which President Barack Obama is trying to fend off Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Since climbing out of the 2007-09 recession, the economy has faced a series of headwinds from high gasoline prices to the debt turmoil in Europe and, lately, fears of U.S. government austerity.

It has struggled to exceed a 2 percent growth pace and remains about 4.5 million jobs short of where it stood when the downturn started.

Consumers, however, largely shrugged off the impending sharp cuts in government spending and higher taxes, which are due at the start of the year absent congressional action.

Indeed, they went on a bit of a shopping spree as the quarter wound down, buying a range of goods - including automobiles and Apple Inc's iPhone 5.

Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, grew at a 2 percent rate after increasing 1.5 percent in the prior period.

Spending despite income squeeze
High stock prices and firming house values have made households a bit more willing to take on new debt, supporting consumer spending. However, incomes were squeezed in the last quarter, causing households to save less to fund their purchases.

The amount of income available to households after accounting for inflation and taxes rose at a tepid 0.8 percent rate in the third quarter, slowing for a brisk 3.1 percent pace the prior period. The saving rate slowed to a 3.7 percent rate after increasing 4 percent in the second quarter.

The faster pace of spending was achieved despite a spike in inflation pressures as gasoline prices rose. A price index for personal spending rose at a 1.8 percent rate, accelerating from the second quarter's 0.7 percent pace.

But a core inflation measure that strips out food and energy costs slowed to a 1.3 percent rate after rising 1.7 percent in the prior quarter, suggesting the increase in overall price pressures will be temporary.

With about 23 million Americans either out of work or underemployed, there are fears the current pace of spending will not be sustained, especially if gasoline prices maintain their recent upward march and families get a higher tax bill in 2013.

The automatic tax hikes and government spending cuts, known as the "fiscal cliff," will drain about $600 billion out of the economy next year absent congressional action.

Fiscal cliff fears have already hammered business spending, which dropped at a 1.3 percent pace in the third quarter, falling for the first time since the first three months of 2011.

Part of the drag in business investment, which had been a source of strength for the economy, came from equipment and software, where outlays were the weakest since the second quarter of 2009.

Spending on nonresidential structures contracted after five straight quarters of growth.

In contrast, home building surged at a 14.4 percent rate, thanks in large part to the Federal Reserve's ultra accommodative monetary policy stance, which has driven mortgage rates to record lows.

Inventories were a drag on growth because of a drought in the country's Midwest, which has decimated crops. Farm inventories cut 0.42 percentage point from GDP growth.

In addition, slowing global demand, particularly weakness in Europe and China, caused U.S. exports to contract for the first time since the first quarter of 2009. That left a trade deficit that weighed on GDP growth.

But there was surprisingly good news on government spending, which snapped eight straight quarters of declines on a strong rebound in defense outlays.?

Modular Homes Built to Ship Inexpensively | Daily Business News

JetsonGreen reports Los Angeles-based Connect:Homes has developed a patented system for delivering their modular homes to reduce the overall expense. Noting costs to ship a prefabricated home cross country can amount to $100,000, but to send a container with 64,000 pounds of goods around the world for $5,000, founders Jared Levy and Gordon Stott have developed a framework that allows their homes to be transported by the intermodal shipping container network. Additionally, to circumvent the cost of renting a crane to offload the home at its site, which can run $15,000 a day, giant castors are used to roll the modules onto a foundation. As MHProNews has learned, Connect:Homes include LED lighting, recycled content glass countertops, insulation to maintain interior comfort in any climate, and other features that build credits toward LEED Certification. Homes start at $140 per square foot out of the factory.

Survival of U.S. Affordable Care Act assessed in new commentaries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? As the presidential candidates clash over the fate of the Affordable Care Act, a set of seven essays by leading legal experts, economists, and scholars examines the implications of the Supreme Court's decision on the ACA and makes it clear that there is no consensus about what is economically or morally just when it comes to health care coverage in this country. The essays appear in the Hastings Center Report.

While the essays provide a range of perspectives, a few common themes emerge. Foremost among them is that the individual mandate may not work as it stands.

Mark A. Hall, a professor of law and public health at Wake Forest University, argues that the Court "significantly weakened the individual mandate" by allowing Americans to opt out of insurance coverage if they are willing to pay a tax. This tax penalty leaves the mandate vulnerable because Congress could repeal it through the budget reconciliation process, he says.

Mark V. Pauly, of the Wharton School of Business, offers a contrasting view. While he supports the idea of a mandate, he is concerned that in its present form it may not achieve its goal of getting as many people as possible to buy insurance because the penalty for not doing so is too low -- for some groups, far less than the annual cost of premiums. Pauly also raises the possibility that the mandate could increase health care costs by increasing the number of procedures that the government requires insurers to cover.

Other essays raise concerns about costs. To be fair, writes Paul T. Menzel, a philosopher at Pacific Lutheran University, mandated insurance must be for care that is disciplined and cost-effective. "The cost-control provisions include some laudable next steps but are generally weak," he concludes.

James Stacey Taylor, an associate professor of philosophy at The College of New Jersey, states that the ACA's benevolent appearance is deceptive and that it is "neither economically sound nor morally acceptable." He argues that simply implementing the law will require "a small army of lawyers and bureaucrats," which will raise health care costs.

Several other essays examine what is morally acceptable in the health care arena. While none of them makes a moral case for health reform as a question about an individual's right to health care, they discuss other relevant values: responsibility, community, sympathy, and stewardship. Len M. Nichols, a health economist, professor of health policy, and director of the Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics at George Mason University, focuses on stewardship over health care resources, arguing that all Americans should be assured adequate health care. Although the challenges are great, Nichols suggests we now have the opportunity to remake our health care system into one that serves everyone. Those who oppose the government's role in attaining this goal are willing to stand by while tens of millions of Americans live without health care, he says. "A society that aspires to morality aims higher than that, and our Supreme Court has, by the narrowest of margins, allowed us to continue to dream big," Nichols writes.

William M. Sage, a professor and Vice Provost for Health Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Law, notes that the Supreme Court decision emphasizes the value of protecting personal liberty from government dominion, but in doing so both highlights the absence of solidarity around health reform and magnifies the importance of developing it.

Timothy Stolzfus Jost, who holds the Robert L. Willett Family Professorship of Law at Washington and Lee University, concludes his essay with a statement that might represent the only true consensus about health care reform: "The struggle for the soul of health insurance in the United States may be far from over."

Homeschoolers and Mathematics? ? Homeschooling Research Notes

This post reviews Kathleen Ambruso Acker, Mary W. Gray, Behzad Jalali, and Matthew Pascal, ?Mathematics and Home Schooling? in Notices of the AMS 59, no, 4 (April 2012): 513-521.

All four authors of this paper are affiliated with American University.? The stated aim of this misleadingly titled paper is to analyze the legal framework for homeschooling, noting especially the place of mathematics in it, and then to examine how well homeschooling prepares students for college and employment.

The first part of the article, on legal matters, is an odd pastiche of themes lifted from my book and from work by Jim Dwyer and Kimberly Yuracko.? It is entirely derivative and tends to leap from topic to topic without much of an overarching theme or organizational scheme.

After several pages of meandering commentary on various court cases, historical matters, and state regulations, the authors finally get to the issue of mathematics.? Here the extent of their analysis is to summarize what the various state homeschooling laws and regulations have to say about math.? Here?s the summary:

currently twenty-eight states and the District of Columbia use ?mathematics? for a topic to be learned by those who are home schooled, although content is not specified.? North Dakota and Pennsylvania are two states that detail the number of mathematics credits and mention algebra as required study.? Seven states note that subjects covered should be comparable to those in the curriculum of the public school system.? Three other states only require that students learn arithmetic, and no mention is made of higher mathematics.? In Vermont the statutory language for required topics notes that students should study the use of numbers.? Although the state of Oklahoma strongly recommends the study of mathematics, it does not require it by law.? Only three states impose on home-schooled students, by law, high school graduation requirements that include mathematics. (p. 517-518)

After noting how sharply this lax attitude toward homeschooling contrasts with the intense emphasis in public education on mathematics accountability through high-stakes testing, the authors introduce their final theme.? It is the potential discrimination against girls that might be occurring in homeschooling families who believe that their daughters, whom God created solely to be mothers, should not take math or go to college.? The only evidence they cite that this may be happening is lifted entirely from Yuracko?s article I reviewed here, and it consists of quotes from two advice books written by fundamentalist Christians to homeschooling girls.

After finding that states don?t really require much math of homeschoolers and don?t really enforce even what they do require, and after worrying that there may be a generation of young homeschooling girls not being given the basic mathematics education necessary for many good jobs today, the authors conclude by recommending regulations lifted entirely from Judith McMullen?s 2002 piece ?Behind Closed Doors,? which appeared in the South Carolina Law Review (but is not in their reference list).? McMullen wants all homeschoolers to be required to register, to take vaccinations, to be given ?age-appropriate competence testing in reading and mathematics,? and to receive some kind of independent monitoring.

Aside from the one paragraph that summarizes state laws about homeschooler math requirements, there?s nothing new or interesting in this piece.? I have no idea why it was published.? We need good studies of homeschooling and mathematics.? When I saw the title of this piece I was looking forward to reading what these four authors had discovered.? But all I got was a weak summary of older work.

Midlife Behaviors Crucial to Healthy Aging | Psych Central News

Midlife Behaviors Crucial to Healthy Aging New research reveals that?healthy behavior in midlife can significantly improve the well-being of individuals as they age.

Investigators observed that combining behaviors such as not smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, exercise, and eating fruits and vegetables daily makes it significantly more likely people will stay healthy as they age.

The study is published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ).

?Our study shows the cumulative impact of healthy behaviors on successful aging ? the greater the number of healthy behaviors, the greater the benefit,? writes?S?verine Sabia, Ph.D., with the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London.

Successful aging was defined as maintaining the ability to function well with good mobility, cognitive skills, respiratory function, mental health and no chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke or disability at age 60 years or older.

Normal aging included people who were alive at the end of the 16-year study but who had chronic disease and/or lower scores on functioning and mental health.

?Among members of a large cohort of British men and women 42-63 years of age at baseline, all four healthy behaviors examined during midlife ? were associated with greater odds of successfully aging during a 16-year follow-up,? write the authors.

?Compared with participants who engaged in no healthy behaviors, those who engaged in all four healthy behaviors had greater odds of aging successfully.?

Researchers in the UK and France studied 5,100 men and women from the Whitehall II public health survey who did not have cancer, heart disease or stroke in the assessment phase from 1991 to 1994. They then followed this cohort from 2007 to 2009.

Of the total participants, 549 died during follow-up, and 953 were classified as successfully aging while the remaining people aged normally.

People in the successfully aging group were younger than the normally aging group (mean age 49.7?versus 51.3 years), and 81 percent were married compared with 78 percent in the second group and 71 percent in the deceased group.

Education appears to play a role in aging as successful agers were more likely to have higher education than the normally aging group (32 percent v. 24 percent ) and 18 percent in the deceased group.

In the study population, five percent of people did not engage in any of the four healthy behaviors.

?Although individual healthy behaviors are moderately associated with successful aging, their combined impact is quite substantial. Multiple healthy behaviors appear to increase the chance of reaching old age disease-free and fully functional in an additive manner,? concluded the authors.

The take-home message is a healthy lifestyle includes exercise, diet, moderate alcohol consumption and not smoking. The good news is that following this path of good behavior is linked to successful aging.

Assault in Afghanistan leaves six dead

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan police officer and cook poisoned their colleagues at a checkpoint in an assault coordinated with insurgent fighters that left six dead in the country's south, officials said Saturday.

It was the latest in a string of attacks from inside the Afghan army and police that are threatening to undermine both the partnership with international troops ? which have been the target of many attacks ? and the morale of Afghan forces, who have suffered equally heavy casualties from such strikes.

The police officer and the cook worked with outside insurgents in the assault, which hit police manning a checkpoint in the Gereskh district of Helmand province, the governor's office said in a statement.

They poisoned two of the officers and then the militants attacked from outside, killing the remaining four officers, provincial spokesman Ahmad Zirak said. He did not say how the officers were poisoned. The police officer was captured as he fled, but the cook escaped and remains at large, Zirak added.

The insurgent gunmen escaped by motorcycle with weapons and ammunition, the governor's statement said.

A recent upsurge in the number of insider attacks on coalition troops by Afghan soldiers or police ? or insurgents disguised in their uniforms ? has further undermined public support for the war in the West. So far this year, at least 52 foreign troops ? about half of them Americans ? have been killed in insider attacks.

The Afghan government has not provided statistics on the number of its forces killed in insider attacks. However, U.S. military statistics obtained by The Associated Press show at least 53 members of the Afghan security forces had been killed by the end of August.

Meanwhile, a Taliban attack elsewhere in Helmand killed two district community council members, while Taliban-fired rocket-propelled grenades destroyed a warehouse full of food destined for the main U.S. base in Afghanistan.

Insurgents ambushed the council members while they were driving to a tribal meeting in the volatile Sangin district, the governor's office said in its statement, adding that the attackers escaped and police are pursuing them.

The attack against the council members is a reminder of the other worrying trend in insurgent tactics this year ? a shift toward more targeted killings of those affiliated with the government. The United Nations has recorded a sharp increase in such killings in the first six months of 2012 as compared with the same period of 2011.

In the warehouse attack, insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades at a compound used by military contractor Supreme Group to store food and other supplies destined for Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. base in the country. A warehouse inside the compound caught fire in the assault and burned through the night.

"The local fire brigade attended the scene and brought the fire under control, but the warehouse itself and all contents were destroyed," Victoria Frost, a spokeswoman for Supreme Group in Dubai, wrote in an email. She said no one was injured and staff at the site did not have to evacuate.

The fire could still be seen burning Saturday morning, said Mohammad Asif, the deputy administrator for Bagram district, where the compound is located. He said the Supreme compound encompasses about five hectares (12 acres).

Frost said the fire was contained much earlier.

"As with any major fire, there are some areas still smoldering but there is no current danger to any of the staff or the other buildings within the compound," she said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email that the fire at the Supreme Group compound destroyed a "large stock of food meant for U.S. troops."

Frost did not say how much material was destroyed though she did say it was "primarily food supplies," adding that the company was working to make up the loss with inventory from other warehouses.

(AP) ? Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve drew national attention with her screaming, jacket-tossing meltdown in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals.

The Indiana Fever silenced her in Game 3. Shavonte Zellous scored a career-high 30 points to help the Fever beat the Lynx 76-59 on Friday night.

"You know, I was fired up for this game," Zellous said. "That Game 2 left a bad taste in our mouth. You know, we could have done a better job in a lot of different things, and I think today, we made a conscious effort to do things better."

Tamika Catchings added 17 points and Erlana Larkins had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Fever, who took a 2-1 lead in the series and can win their first title at home Sunday night against the defending champs.

It had been a tense series. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve was fined after her actions in Game 2, which Fever coach Lin Dunn called "disrespectful."

Indiana's play did the talking on Friday. The Fever's lead of 70-33 with 1:58 left in the third quarter was the largest lead by any team in WNBA Finals history. The extent of the blowout left Reeve seated with her hand on her chin for much of the second half.

Rebekkah Brunson, who scored 12 points, was the only Minnesota player to reach double figures.

"I think Indiana played the way Indiana always plays," Reeve said. "They defend. You defend, you have a chance to win a championship. That's it."

When asked what the Lynx need to do differently in Game 4, Reeve simply said, "Score more points than them."

Minnesota's previous playoff scoring low this season was 70 points against the Fever in Game 1 of the Finals. Maya Moore was held to eight points in Game 3 and Seimone Augustus, who scored 27 points in Game 2, had six on 3-for-9 shooting on Friday night. Minnesota finished with just six assists.

Indiana did it all without No. 2 scorer Katie Douglas. She is still sidelined with a severely sprained left ankle. Reserve guard Jeanette Pohlen is out with a left knee injury.

The game was intense again, but in control. The only incident was a rare technical called against Catchings with the game well in hand for the Fever.

Indiana led 21-16 at the end of the first quarter, and the Fever extended their lead to 28-18 in the second quarter, forcing the Lynx to call a timeout.

A no-look pass by Catchings directly led to a 3-pointer by Zellous that gave the Fever a 33-20 advantage. On Indiana's next possession, Catchings drove through traffic for a layup to push the lead to 15. The Fever held Minnesota scoreless for 3:40 during a 12-0 run to take a 40-20 edge.

Indiana led 45-27 at halftime. Minnesota shot 5-for-19 from the field in the second quarter. Those tough, contested shots the Lynx made in the first quarter didn't fall in the second. Indiana outrebounded Minnesota 20-15 in the first half, forced nine turnovers and committed just three.

"We started the offense by going at them on the defensive end," Zellous said. "We were able to get an attack. We were pushing up on them. We didn't let them do what they did to us on Game 2, and it made our job so much easier on offense."

The Fever didn't rest. Catchings' baseline jumper pushed Indiana's lead back to 20 early in the third quarter. Erin Phillips was fouled on a 3-pointer by Monica Wright, and she fell to the ground in front of Reeve. Phillips made all three free throws to make it 54-29.

Indiana continued to pour it on and led 70-38 at the end of the third quarter.

The Fever went on cruise control in the fourth quarter as Minnesota tried to make the score more respectable. Zellous finally made Indiana's first field goal of the fourth quarter with 2:21 remaining, and the Fever still had a 20-point lead at that point.

Indiana knows the series isn't over. The Fever led Phoenix 2-1 in 2009 and could have clinched in Game 4 at home. Indiana lost that game, then lost Game 5 and the series in Phoenix.

"We sat in the huddle and I told everybody, 'Don't get excited about this. Do not get excited,'" Catchings said. "We'll come back in here tomorrow, we'll look at some video and get better tomorrow and we'll come back out Sunday. I don't want anybody celebrating. None of that."

The Fever also know Minnesota won't quit.

"We expect the defending champs to come out and play like their backs are against the wall," Fever guard Briann January said. "We know they're going to give everything, and we have to respond and we have to bring everything we have. It's going to be another war."
