When I started writing this article, my intention was to focus on effective time management online business owners, but after a while I realized that the same advice applies to any small business owner. So I kept my original title.
Effective time management is maybe more important for small business owners than larger companies in spite what you might think. And why is that? I believe that many small business owners starts their business with the idea that they have such a unique business and that they are going to make a success of it in a way no one has ever done it before. So effective time management will not be necessary since they are going to do what feels right at the time. It sounds a bit crazy spelled out like this, but it is the truth.
So even if you just run a part time online business as an affiliate or maybe running a MLM company, you should learn to practice effective time management as early as possible. So even if you do not have any earlier experience in effective time management, you will soon see the difference when you start to pick up some knowledge and start building your routines accordingly. And maybe you will notice that you actually can not manage time, but you can manage yourself and your behavior. And that is the essence in effective time management. And to get you started I would like to point out four important ingredients that may be the corner stones for your success.?
4 steps for effective time management
- Create a goal.You need to be specific in what you are trying to accomplish. Write down your goals in concrete terms and for different time frames. You could define your goal for this year, break it down for each month and so on. Work your way from the end of your long term goal back to where you are today.
- Schedule your tasksOnce you have completed your goals, it will be easier to define your tasks to reach each goal. Use the same strategy as for your goals. Use a flowchart to define the major tasks and break them down to daily tasks that could be added to your calendar.
- Use toolsThere are many tools available for effective time management. And many of them are for free and can be used in lots of different companies. (As well as for your private planning). I am thinking of tools like Google Documents, Dropbox, Basecamp and similar project and file management systems. - Delegate tasksFor a newly started business owner this can be a bit difficult, but at times it can be really helpful and effective time management if you can find some help from family members or even consider hiring someone to take some of the load from you. So effective time management is as you have seen, as important or even more important than you could ever imagine. It will make your business mores successful and it will release more time for you to spend on other things. The foundation of effective time management is to be be more structured and keeping track of the things you do. And once your small one man business really takes off, you will be really pleased to see that you took care of the planning and structure from the start. And with a well planned business with written goals and tasks, you could actually find someone to run it for you, while you take some days of at a well deserved holiday resort!
